UPDATE FOR FEB 13th and some site news...

2/13/2011

Well, another busy weekend. The first section of the new Episode of VIETNAM STORY has been sent to GL and also placed on Point Man's Privy. This first section of the story contains the first "real ads" to be
placed in one of my online comic books.
Picture
You will probably have noticed, if you paused on the Home Page that there is a matching ad for Toy Chest and Collectibles there, with a link to their website. This is the first of what will be many ads, part of a growing relationship between the SSCC  Ohio and TC&C.
Picture
It is our hope that these ads will in some small way help to grow Cory's business and that we will have his support of our events for the foreseeable future. Cory is a first class individual in every respect and we are really happy to have him onboard for the 2011 November Ft. Thomas show. We have no idea whether the advertising will have any effect at all - this is an experiment to be sure, but if it does well for Cory, I believe that we will expand the practice to include our other event vendors if they so desire.

As a grocery advertising guy (for the past 30 years), it is really exciting for me to be working on something different and new and this is a great opportunity to do something with art that doesn't take the shape of soup cans, heads of lettuce or cereal boxes.

The newest episode of VIETNAM STORY is called THE BUILDUP. It is divided into six sections and will unfold both on GL's Ultimate Soldier Unofficial Fan Page as well as my own site, Point Man's Privy. The first section of the story is already posted at my site and GL has the files as well, hopefully to post this week. The story is milestone for me because it is my first use of my FIREBASE COOPER diorama, which I previewed at the 2010 Ft. Thomas show. I am hoping that we can even use that as an advertising point for this year's show, you know something like, "Come see Firebase Cooper and the actors of Vietnam Story". I have thought that it might be cool to advertise a seminar for this year's show on Storytelling and Creating Comics. Comic Life, which is one of the programs I use has just upgraded to a new version for MAC and the word is that it will be available for PC for the first time this year. Without a doubt, it is the best in it's class of program and that is going to be welcome news for folks that are struggling with their online graphic novels. I am pretty excite about the news for a number of people.

Picture
This is a sample of another ad page that is in the first section of the new episode. I had hoped that I would be able to run my comics with the ad pages at the OSW site as well. This is up in the air at the moment. The OSW group have some rules about advertising and this is a borderline issue. I have made the request and their staff is reviewing it. I would hope that they would see it as being part of my online magazine and let it fly, if not, I will have to drop them as  place to post. I hate to do that because I think I would have a much larger audience by adding that site, but I will not violate their rules obviously and I will not run the comic without the ads. Well, we'll see how that plays out shortly.

...OTHER NEWS...
I am still messing with the SSCC OHIO FORUM idea. There is a problem. You cannot upload pictures to the forum with the free version of the software. The best you can do is link to pictures that you have already online elsewhere. I just don't think any of us are going to be happy with that setup. The upgrade version unfortunately is $6.95 a month and I am just not going to put out $84 a year of my money to pay for the software. It is time to explore some other options. I am sure that there must be some out there, I just don't know what they are. I will keep you all informed of any developments.

I don't know how many people saw these last week. Okimbored had some in progress shots of his sd.kfz 222 and early war SS Troops on the Six Division and GL's and they looked great. I have swiped some of them to drop into the blog as I figured he wouldn't mind. These shots are from GL's as I couldn't get onto the Six Division. Don't know what their problem is today.

Wish that I had thought to get the additional pictures of the armored car on Friday because there were a couple of new angles I hadn't seen previously and they really did a nice joy of showing you the overall vehicle. No doubt about it, it looks great and I sure wish I had one in my German motorpool. Of course I also wish that Okimbored had built it for me so that I didn't have to go through the pain. It really looks sharp man, I sure hope you will be able to attend this spring's Battle of France shoot.
Picture
His troops look outstanding as well, the vehicle crew is really sharp and his infantry troops look exactly like some pictures I have in a Verlinden book. Really, really nice. Where did you get that camera in the camera case? That is like one of the coolest details I have ever seen.

Well, that is it for the UPDATE tonight. It has been a while since I have been regular at this. I will try to do a little better at that going forward. Until next time, have a good one!

ALL IN A WEEKEND...

9/6/2010

I really like long weekends, but the best ones are the kind where you don't have to do anything (like this weekend). It gave me a chance to work on some stuff and I thought I would show you what I got done. I didn't actually work on anything 1:6th, but most of what I did work on was for my display at Ft. Thomas.
Picture

The first thing I worked on was my Ration Pack accessory set. I wanted to be able to show a "sealed" packet as well as the contents of that pack. Listed below are the items in the picture.
1. Accessory Pack
2. P-38 can opener and packaged opener
3. Creamer packet
4. Coffee packet
5. Moisture resistant matches
6. Ration 4 pack cigarette package
7. Salt packet
8. Sugar packet
9. Toilet paper
10. Chiclets Gum box
11. Plastic spoon
The original accessory pack looks to have been a plastic bag with printing on it. I could do that, so I printed it on paper and then covered it with Cellophane before gluing, the bag together. It actually looks really pretty good. Other changes to the content items including resizing a couple of items, adding the Chiclet box and the toilet paper. Eventually, I will probably make art for all these items available in 1:6th. The Marlboro ration pack was available on a reenacting site, but I have now created art of a box of Salems, Pall Mall, Chesterfields and Winstons (all of which were available in ration packs). I also have art for the ration box, but have not figured out how to print it because of the size stock needed.

Next, I worked some more on my 1:1 Vietnam paper items, adding letters, an ID Card and a personal pocket journal. The various items in the picture are listed below.1. Nine Rules Card (double sided), Code of Conduct, Vietnam
2. Enemy In Your Hands Card (double sided, folding)
3. Booby Trap Card (double sided, folding)
4. South Vietnam Ready Reference Facts Card (double sided, folding)
5. Packet of Airmail Letters
6. MACV Ration Card (for PX items)
7. Liberty Pass
8. Meal Card (double sided)
9. Geneva Convention Card
10. Military ID Card
11. Personal Pocket Sized Journal, weathered
12. Dog Tags with silencers ( silencers first appeared around 1969)
The journal is really pretty cool. The entries actually tie into my Vietnam story and will compliment DOC's Diary. It is for my reenacting impression however and the photos contained in it, are of real people.
Picture
The next item of business this weekend was my Vietnam rifles (airsoft). For the display I wanted to get rid of the typical red-tip barrel that is standard to all airsoft weapons and was present on my M-16 and M-14. I started by taking some fine sand paper to the red paint to rough it up, or remove it, whichever came first. That done; I masked off the inside of the barrels and taped off and covered the rest of the guns. Then I sprayed with some flat black. When that was dry, I went back and hit it lightly with some metallic black. Once it was dry, I was able to remove the paper out of the barrels and un-tape everything. The result is some pretty realistic looking weapons. In the photo above, you are looking at my M-14, M-16  and M-79. I will be bringing the M-79 to the meeting on Wednesday at Hammer Six's request.
Picture
Next, is a picture of the display case that will be part of my Ft. Thomas display. This is a display of some items from the Vietnam Story saga, including Doc's Diary, some medals and patches and a 40 some year old package of Camel cigarettes (unopened). I am really pleased with the way this came out. It will be interesting to see over the course of four days how many people thing this stuff is real. I plan to have some fun with it.
Picture
The last thing I worked on this weekend is a sample of a Ft. Thomas ID that will be available to club members that want them. I will tell everyone a little bit more about this on Wednesday. It is styled after a current Military ID on the front, though it is very much themed for the SSCC. The back has an EVENT STAFF message. The ID is done on heavy card-stock and is laminated and comes with a lanyard. It looks a little washed out in the picture, I think that was because of my flash. It's actually fairly bright. I can do the laminating myself. If you do want one, I will be appreciative of anyone who would like to give a dollar donation to help pay for the materials, but regardless, If you are going to be working Ft. Thomas and want one, I will make one for you.
Well, that is what I did this weekend. It was fairly productive. Hope everyone else had a great time. Until next time, have a good one.

STAR TREK - ARTWORK

8/25/2010

Quite a while ago I talked about the process of building a Starship Bridge for my Star Trek - First Generation series. Next, I covered the process of creating a special effect like "beaming down". Tonight, I would like to continue along the same vein with a look at the artwork that completed that bridge that I first talked about.
Picture
The bridge of my USS Bunker Hill is admittedly, a pretty cool set, but what really makes it special is the artwork panels that appear at all the various crew stations.
Picture
Without that artwork, there really wouldn't be anything about the bridge to catch the viewer's eye. Those colorful panels that we have seen on the Next Generation, Deep Space Nine and Voyager, well... they are what make the starship set believable.
Picture
The ones I use on my set are highly detailed, they go together and they all came from a single source. Years ago, I picked up a Trekie "Manual" for the Deep Space Nine series. In that book were beautiful color plates of pretty much all of the control surfaces on the USS Defiant bridge. When I decided that I wanted to do a 1:6th Star Trek series and that I was going to build a scaled down version of the Defiant bridge, I had all the art at my fingertips.
Picture
It was just a matter of scanning it and scaling it down to the size of my model. I printed the final artwork on gloss photo paper so that I would have the sort of shiny "glass-like" surfaces that you see in the TV shows.
Picture
The effect worked far better than I ever imagined and the end result was a pretty realistic looking environment for my 1:6th actors to work in.
Picture
And it has held up pretty good over time, which is rather amazing considering that it came to Ohio in the back of the car and my first episode was shot on the dining room table of a temporary apartment the first month I was here. I think the Bunker Hill still has quite a few Voyages in her... going where no 1:6th Action Figure has gone before.

Until next time, have a good one!
